I’m a Cat, Sometimes
In Harry’s Wizarding World, there are many ways to transform into a cat. You can be an Animagus—a witch or wizard with the rare ability of being able to change your physical forms into that of an animal’s. Even if you weren’t an Animagus, you could also transform yourself into a cat, thanks to the polyjuice potion, or you could be transfigured.
- Minerva McGonagall – No matter how cold and strict she was as a professor at Hogwarts, we can’t deny her silver tabby cat form was totally adorable. She first appeared as a cat waiting outside the Dursley’s house. Little did we know that this seemingly innocuous tabby would later transform into one of the most powerful and influential witches in the series. As far as we know, Professor McGonagall was the only registered Animagus who turned into a cat.
- Hermione Granger – When she mistakenly took a hair of Millicent Bulstrode’s cat to use in her polyjuice potion, the most unfortunate thing happened to Hermione as she found herself transformed into a cat-human hybrid. Oh, but who could forget those doleful golden eyes?
Magical and Not So Magical Cats in Harry’s World
In Harry’s Wizarding World, even cats can be magical creatures. Several kneazles appeared all throughout the series, the most notable of which is Crookshanks.
A kneazle has the physical appearance of a cat, to which they are related. Their furs may vary, some are spotted, while others are speckled. Perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of kneazles is their tails, which are lightly plumed, similar to that of a lion. And, of course, they are magical creatures.
- Crookshanks – Hermione’s squashed-faced and bowlegged ginger cat, whom Harry once thought was a small tiger. Crookshanks, a half-kneazle is known for his intelligence. If you’ve got a smart ginger cat, Crookshanks would be the best name for your pet.
- Mr. Paws – One of Arabella Figg’s deceased cats, whose picture she often showed to Harry.
- Tufty – Tufty is also a part-kneazle and one of Arabella Figg’s deceased pets.
- Snowy – Another part-kneazle pet of Arabella Figg.
- Mr. Tibbles – Arabella Figg’s current pet, Mr. Tibbles is another part-kneazle. He was able to tell Arabella that Harry and Dudley Dursley were attacked by Dementors.
- Milly – Milly is one of the three kneazles owned by Newt and Porpentina Scamander and lives with them in Dorset.
- Mauler – The second of the three kneazles owned by Newt and Porpentina Scamander.
- Hoppy – Hoppy completes the Scamanders’ trio of kneazles.
- Mrs. Norris – One of the most interesting cats in the Wizarding World, Mrs. Norris is scrawny, gray-colored, and has bulging eyes. Filch also calls her My Sweet, although she is anything but that to the students at Hogwarts. The Mrs. Norris in the movies belongs to the Maine Coon breed.
